A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND TANVI MEHTA OF COLUMBIA FOR HER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED A 2017 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD DISTINGUISHED FINALIST.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Tanvi Mehta of Richland County has been selected a 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Award Distinguished Finalist; and

Whereas, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, represents the United States' largest youth-recognition program based solely on volunteer service; and

Whereas, the program judges recognize Distinguished Finalists for their impressive community service activities and present each of the winners with an engraved bronze medallion. In receiving this award, the eighteen year old senior at Spring Valley has achieved national recognition for her exemplary volunteer service; and

Whereas, Tanvi, a National Merit Finalist, has also qualified for the President's Volunteer Service Award which honors Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities and their country; and

Whereas, by founding and directing her school's first mini-Dance Marathon fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network, she raised 7,626 dollars to benefit the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. She worked with school officials, the University of South Carolina Dance Marathon Executive Board, and thirty high school volunteers to organize the event; and

Whereas, the mini-Dance Marathon drew more than two hundred sixty participants and featured guest performers, lip-sync battles, Zumba, and more; and

Whereas, from among more than thirty-one thousand participating young people nationwide in the 22nd annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, Tanvi was chosen as a Distinguished Finalist in order to honor her for using creativity and compassion to bring positive change to her community and for the powerful example she sets for her peers; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives recognizes that the success of the State of South Carolina, as well as the strength of its communities and the vitality of American society as a whole, depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like Tanvi Mehta who use their talents and resources to serve others. The members value Tanvi's sacrificial contributions to her community and look with interest to hear of her continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Tanvi Mehta of Columbia for her outstanding community service and congratulate her upon being named a 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Award Distinguished Finalist.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Tanvi Mehta.
