A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR ANDREW JACKSON STATE PARK AT THE CELEBRATION OF THREE SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES IN ITS HISTORY, THE TWO HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON'S BIRTH, THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOY OF THE WAXHAWS PARK SCULPTURE, AND THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF FRIENDS OF ANDREW JACKSON STATE PARK, AND TO ENCOURAGE ALL CITIZENS OF THE PALMETTO STATE TO VISIT AND ENJOY THIS BEAUTIFUL STATE PARK IN LANCASTER COUNTY.

Whereas, founded in 1952, Andrew Jackson State Park combines history, art, and community activities in a setting that has made it one of the South Carolina State Park Service's most popular attractions. Favorite features of the 360-acre park include living-history programs, a museum that details Andrew Jackson's boyhood in the South Carolina backcountry, and a birthday celebration held each March in honor of the seventh President of the United States. Other park attractions include an eighteenth-century replica schoolhouse, campground and picnic facilities, a fishing lake, and nature trails; and

Whereas, this year, Andrew Jackson State Park celebrates a trio of important landmarks in its history: the sestercentennial anniversary of President Andrew Jackson's birth, the fiftieth anniversary of the Boy of the Waxhaws park sculpture, and the twentieth anniversary of Friends of Andrew Jackson State Park; and

Whereas, Andrew Jackson, born in March 1767 in the Waxhaws region of the Carolinas, was a champion of the common man and a larger-than-life hero. In 1828, he became President of the United States and in 1832 won reelection. To do him honor, Andrew Jackson State Park was created; and

Whereas, further, in saluting Anna Hyatt Huntington's creation of Boy of the Waxhaws, a ten-foot-tall, 3,500-pound bronze park sculpture depicting a young Andrew Jackson, the park honors the artist's last major work. In paying tribute to twenty years of service on the part of Friends of Andrew Jackson State Park, the park gives praise to a dedicated band of volunteers who assist park staff in sharing the history of the birthplace of the seventh U.S. President; and

Whereas, the House takes great pleasure in celebrating the rich heritage of Andrew Jackson State Park on the occasion of these three notable anniversaries, and the people of this great State are urged to take advantage of the many family-friendly offerings at Andrew Jackson State Park throughout the year. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Andrew Jackson State Park at the celebration of three significant milestones in its history, the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of President Andrew Jackson's birth, the fiftieth anniversary of the Boy of the Waxhaws park sculpture, and the twentieth anniversary of Friends of Andrew Jackson State Park, and encourage all citizens of the Palmetto State to visit and enjoy this beautiful state park in Lancaster County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Andrew Jackson State Park.
