A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO SALUTE RUTLEDGE B. LELAND III, MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF MCCLELLANVILLE, WHO, HAVING FILLED HIS POST AS MAYOR WITH DISTINCTION FOR MORE THAN FOUR DECADES, IS WORTHY OF DEEP APPRECIATION FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF COMMITTED SERVICE AND BEST WISHES FOR MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, for more than four decades, the Town of McClellanville has enjoyed the benefit of the dedication, experience, and leadership of Mayor Rutledge B. Leland III, esteemed by all who know him; and

Whereas, born in Charleston on January 31, 1944, Rutledge B. Leland III grew up in McClellanville, where he graduated from McClellanville High School in 1962. In preparation for his career, he earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management from Clemson in 1966, next serving as an Air Force captain until 1970. In that same year, he returned to McClellanville, where he is presently the owner/manager of Carolina Seafoods, Inc.; and

Whereas, in 1972, Rutledge Leland won election to McClellanville Town Council and began what is now a forty-six-year span of dedicated service to his town. He has served as the town's mayor since 1976, making him one of the state's longest-serving mayors. In this leadership capacity, he led the town through the Hurricane Hugo disaster and the recovery years following the storm; and

Whereas, Mayor Leland has devoted countless hours to the welfare and betterment of the town and its citizens and has done so on a volunteer basis with no compensation; and

Whereas, in 2016, feeling that his unmatched years of service to the town should be recognized and memorialized, McClellanville Town Council named the Rutledge B. Leland III Municipal Services Building in the mayor's honor; and

Whereas, the House, appreciative of the dedication and leadership Mayor Leland has bestowed on this great State, and particularly on the people of McClellanville, takes great pleasure in wishing him all the best as he continues serving his beloved town. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, salute Rutledge B. Leland III, mayor of the town of McClellanville, who, having filled his post as mayor with distinction for more than four decades, is worthy of deep appreciation for his many years of committed service and best wishes for much continued success in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mayor Rutledge B. Leland III.
