A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO DECLARE AUGUST 19, 2018, AS "13 CHILD WARRIORS" DAY IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO THANK THESE GROUNDBREAKING CITIZENS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THEIR MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF DARLINGTON, THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina wish to recognize the heroic "13 Child Warriors" of Darlington, South Carolina, who were among the first African-American students to attend St. John's High School and were at the forefront of the desegregation of Darlington County public schools; and

Whereas, in recognition of the display of bravery, steadfastness, and civic-mindedness as demonstrated by these "13 Child Warriors," who, in being obedient to their community elders and nurturing parents, sacrificed their youthful innocence and, deliberately and nonviolently, fought against the sins of racism, greed, and injustice as codified in hollow laws observed until the 1960s. In the end, these courageous individuals were victorious; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the South Carolina House of Representatives, as present-day stewards of our community, affirm and express an appropriate attitude of remorse for the sins of our forbearers and, in doing so, welcome and embrace a new day and attitude of justice, equality, forgiveness, unity, peace, love, respect, and reconciliation as demonstrated by announcing this statement of determination; and

Whereas, in addition, acknowledged by name are the elders and parents alike including, but not limited to: the late Arthur Whitfield "Man" Stanley and Theodosia King-Stanley; the late Whitfield Sims, Sr., and Beatrice Wingate-Sims; the late Robert Brown and Janie Sue Anderson-Brown; the late Clarence L. Wingate and Lily Fraser-Wingate; and also the dutiful students: Whitfield Sims, Jr.; the late Cordell Sims; the late Farris Sims-Planter; Jacqueline Brown-Coppedge; Thomas Brown; Ashley Brown; Theodore Stanley, also known as Abdul Hakim Yasin; Emily Stanley-Stanley; and Clarence Keith Wingate, all of the City of Darlington; and Linda Peterson and Nathaniel Rogers, of Hartsville. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, declare August 19, 2018, as "13 Child Warriors" day in the State of South Carolina and thank these groundbreaking citizens and their families for their many contributions to the City of Darlington, the State of South Carolina, and the United States of America.
