TO WELCOME HANNAH Y. KIM, AN ADVOCATE FOR KOREAN WAR VETERANS, AS SHE VISITS THE KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL ON MAULDIN ROAD IN GREENVILLE'S CONESTEE PARK, AND TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND HER MEANINGFUL WORK TO HONOR AMERICA'S KOREAN WAR VETERANS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Hannah Kim will visit the Korean War Memorial in Greenville on June 15, 2018; and
Whereas, a woman with a mission, Ms. Kim will visit the Korean War Memorial to present a commemorative wreath in remembrance and honor of those who served from 1950 to 1953 in Korea over sixty-five years ago, so far away from their homes in America; and
Whereas, as part of an elaborate three-month trek, her thirty-sixth stop will be South Carolina in her timely crusade to help promote peace on the tumultuous Korean Peninsula by visiting Korean War memorials in all fifty states; and
Whereas, previously, Ms. Kim has visited the twenty-four countries that participated in the Korean War, as well as the United Nations Korean War Cemetery in the Republic of Korea; and
Whereas, she hopes that her journey marked with these visits will serve to renew interest in the Wall of Remembrance, the long-anticipated addition to the Korean War Veterans Memorial in the nation's capital; and
Whereas, although Congress approved construction of the monument in 2016, a lack of funding hindered construction for two years, so the names of the nearly thirty-seven thousand Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean Conflict are still waiting to be inscribed on the Wall for posterity; and
Whereas, Ms. Kim's dedicated cause on behalf of Korean War veterans began in 2008 when, as a twenty-four-year-old graduate student in Washington, D. C., she established Remember727, an organization dedicated to honoring veterans of what is called the "Forgotten War"; and
Whereas, she lobbied the United States Congress to enact the legislation signed by President Obama in 2009, which established July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day; and
Whereas, Ms. Kim subsequently served as the communications director and later as chief of staff for Congressman Charles B. Rangel, a decorated Korean War veteran. When he retired in 2017, she embarked on her meaningful odyssey around the world, visiting every country that was part of the United Nations' effort during the war and interviewing two hundred veterans to celebrate their stories, because she realizes that if they had not fought in Korea, she would not be alive; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the outstanding tribute that Hannah Kim has made to Korean War veterans, and the members look to hear of the successful and lasting conclusion to her iconic crusade. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, welcome Hannah Y. Kim, an advocate for Korean War veterans, as she visits the Korean War Memorial on Mauldin Road in Greenville's Conestee Park, and recognize and commend her meaningful work to honor America's Korean War Veterans.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Hannah Y. Kim.
