VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF HAROLD T. SPEARS OF MARLBORO COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Harold T. Spears of Marlboro County on May 4, 2018, at the venerable age of ninety-seven; and
Whereas, born July 24, 1920, he joined the United States Army on November 14, 1941, and was honorably discharged November 9, 1945. Mr. Spears attained the rank of sergeant while serving with the 357th Engineer Battalion out of Fort Benning, Georgia, by way of Bennettsville. For his faithful service, he was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, EAMET (European African Middle Eastern Theater) Ribbon with one bronze service star, and Victory Medal. Harold Spears was an active member of the Glee Club while in the military and often travelled to other duty stations to entertain the troops; and
Whereas, upon his return from active military service, he worked as a master carpenter and farmer; and
Whereas, on the home front, Harold Spears wed his beloved Carolyn, and the two were blessed with a marriage of sixty-two years. To this union were born six children, who gave their parents the joy of eleven grandchildren; and
Whereas, as a man of faith, Mr. Spears was a dedicated member of Spears United Methodist Church (later called Trinity United Methodist Church). He served in several positions within the church and enjoyed helping others. One of his mottos was "whatever God puts in my hands to do, let me do it"; and
Whereas, this amazing veteran who loved life and people was active in every program presented by the Veterans Affairs Office. On November 11, 2017, he was presented with a quilt of valor by the Marlboro County Veterans Affairs Office and Embrace Hospice for his devoted and continuous service to this country and to the citizens of Marlboro County. He will be missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Harold T. Spears of Marlboro County and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harold T. Spears.
