A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR DR. MARC J. SOSNE, SUPERINTENDENT FOR CLOVER SCHOOL DISTRICT, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER A DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF FORTY-SIX YEARS IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives have learned that Dr. Marc J. Sosne will begin a well-deserved retirement on June 30, 2018, after more than forty-five years of service as an educator, most recently as superintendent of Clover School District from 2007 to 2018; and

Whereas, in preparation for his life's work, Dr. Sosne earned a bachelor's degree in American history at the State University of New York at Albany, followed by a master's degree and a doctorate, both in educational administration and both awarded by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and

Whereas, in 1972, Marc Sosne began his career in public education in Rochester, New York, where he taught history. Over the course of his career, he has served as a teacher, assistant principal, and assistant superintendent, as well as district superintendent for Pender County schools and Washington County schools, and superintendent in residence at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington; and

Whereas, a respected leader within his profession, Dr. Sosne has overseen the expansion of the Clover School District and the building of two state-of-the-art elementary and middle schools and a community YMCA. He helped to beckon in a 1:1 technology program to reach twenty-first century learners, expand educational advanced-placement (AP) and career and technology course offerings. Under his leadership, the county's first middle-college program was started, as well as a summer reading program and a backpack program to feed hungry children; and

Whereas, because he believes strongly in personal involvement with his community, Dr. Sosne serves his fellow citizens through membership with the Clover Rotary Club, Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Board of Directors for the Olde English Consortium; and

Whereas, in recognition of his dedicated service to the people of North and South Carolina, Marc Sosne has been granted numerous honors. He received the 1999 Administrator of the Year Award, the 2004 Superintendent of the Year Award, and the Community Service Award from the Lions Club, and he was named the Kiwanian of the Year; and

Whereas, South Carolina State Senator Mike Fanning says of Dr. Sosne, he "has a vision for educational policy statewide but also how it would impact locally. Whether it be school boards deciding start dates or the effect of over-testing in our classrooms, Dr. Sosne brought folks together to advocate for teachers and children. Further, he was a leader of a nine district consortium for eleven years consolidating resources across district and university lines long before others were simply looking to consolidate districts. His vision for sharing resources and collaboration have led to improved professional development for teachers and learning of students"; and

Whereas, grateful for the legacy of committed excellence Dr. Sosne has bestowed on the people of South Carolina, the South Carolina House of Representatives takes great pleasure in wishing him well as he enters his well-earned retirement, and the members trust he will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate, and honor Dr. Marc J. Sosne, superintendent for Clover School District, upon the occasion of his retirement after a distinguished career of forty-six years in the field of education and wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Marc J. Sosne.
