A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 56-5-3435 OF THE 1976 CODE, RELATING TO MAINTAINING A SAFE OPERATING DISTANCE BETWEEN A MOTOR VEHICLE AND A BICYCLE, TO DEFINE "SAFE OPERATING DISTANCE."

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 56-5-3435 of the 1976 Code is amended to read:

    "Section 56-5-3435.    A driver of a motor vehicle must at all times maintain a safe operating distance between the motor vehicle and a bicycle. 'Safe operating distance' means not less than three feet and must be maintained until the driver of the motor vehicle has clearance to pass the bicycle safely."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
