TO RECOGNIZE APRIL 6, 2022, "STO PROGRAMS DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND BUSINESSES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CONSUMER-FACING PROGRAMS OFFERED AT THE STATE TREASURER'S OFFICE.
Whereas, the State Treasurer's Office administers multiple programs to benefit the citizens of South Carolina; and
Whereas, as student loan debt continues to increase, saving for a college education is an important investment in a child's future. South Carolina's Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan currently serves more than two hundred thousand families with nearly six billion dollars in assets under management; and
Whereas, individuals with disabilities and their families who care for them should have access to the same kinds of savings tools that are available to the broader population. In order to serve these families, the Palmetto ABLE Savings Program provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to save for their future without losing government benefits; and
Whereas, rightful owners of unclaimed property, or their heirs, always have a right to claim property held in custody by the State Treasurer's Office. The South Carolina Unclaimed Property Program returned over thirty-five million dollars last fiscal year and currently has more than seven hundred million dollars in unclaimed funds available for claim. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize April 6, 2022, "STO Programs Day" in South Carolina and encourage individuals, families, and businesses to learn more about the consumer-facing programs offered at the State Treasurer's Office.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the organizers of "STO Programs Day."
