VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO CELEBRATE THE DENMARK-OLAR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR CAPTURING THE 2022 CLASS A UPPER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO APPLAUD THE TEAM'S STELLAR PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF.
Whereas, in a triple-overtime thriller, the Denmark-Olar High School girls basketball team added another triumph to an already outstanding season by capturing the 2022 Class A Upper State Championship title, defeating High Point 62-58 on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Bob Jones University's Davis Field House in Greenville; and
Whereas, in capturing the upper state championship, the Lady Vikings (25-4) focused all their knowledge, skill, and determination, took to heart their coaches' exhortations, and came through like the champions they are; and
Whereas, the three overtime periods, at four minutes a pop, essentially added an extra one and a half quarters to a game that saw various lead changes in crucial moments, a buzzer-beater, and, overall, high-octane basketball with all the stakes that come with the chance to play for a state championship; and
Whereas, all the fans at Davis Field House were either on their feet or on the edge of their seats for the last portion of this instant classic that saw Denmark-Olar outplay High Point; and
Whereas, from the tip, the Lady Vikings took the upper hand, but every time they felt as if they were going to create a comfortable lead over High Point, the Lady Grizzlies clawed their way back to keep the ball game going; and
Whereas, coming out for the second half, the Lady Vikings were able to push their halftime lead to as much as seven points with just 1:48 left in the third, and they were able to keep that lead for most of the fourth quarter. When the game went into overtime, Denmark-Olar got the better of High Point, taking the lead and holding it until the final minute of the period, which ended in a tie. The game went into a second and then a third overtime, both of which saw Denmark-Olar taking the lead and High Point fighting back hard. But in the third overtime, High Point didn't have enough in the tank for a fourth miracle comeback, and the Lady Vikings survived an absolute battle to punch their ticket to the state championship game; and
Whereas, having honed his players into a championship machine, Head Coach Terence Jones saw the fruit of his labors as the upper state title trophy was hoisted; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the young players of the Denmark-Olar High School girls basketball team for leading with excellence, both in the classroom and on the court, and expects to hear of continued great achievements in the years ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, celebrate the Denmark-Olar High School girls basketball team for capturing the 2022 Class A Upper State Championship title and applaud the team's stellar players, coaches, and staff.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Mitch Baker and Head Coach Terence Jones of Denmark-Olar High School.
