A house RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MAULDIN HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2023 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS AAAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Mauldin basketball team of Greenville County captured the state title at the state tournament held at the University of South Carolina Aiken Convocation Center on Saturday, March 4, 2023; and

Whereas, to the cheers of their long-faithful and exuberant fans, the Mauldin Lady Mavericks defeated a competitive Stratford High School 62-57 and finished the season with seventeen straight victories and an impressive 24-5 record; and

Whereas, at the end of the first quarter, Mauldin was leading 19-2, but Stratford battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Mavericks 25-5 by outrebounding them 12-1. Stratford was able to reduce the seventeen-point lead to a seven-point lead. Mauldin went to the lockers at halftime leading 24-17, and when they returned to the hardwoods, Stratford could only reduce the score by two more points, giving the Lady Mavericks a 62-57 win and a trophy; and

Whereas, with only two seniors on the team, Mauldin's underclasswomen led the night: Freshman Zara Leamon led the team in the championship game with 24 points, going 4 for 6 on 3 pointers; Sophomore Trinity Jones posted 20 points and seven assists; and Sophomore Delilah Soltys added nine points; and

Whereas, Mauldin's last appearance at the state championship game was in 1997, and the program has not won a title game since the 1956-1957 season; and

Whereas, Head Coach Angel McGowan, a former standout player at J. L. Mann and Georgia Southern, is in her second season with the Lady Mavericks. In a sport that demands strength, speed, and accuracy, she and her skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic experience and training to forge a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the courts; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives values the pride and recognition that the Mauldin basketball players have brought to their school and their community, and the members look forward to following their tremendous achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Mauldin High School girls varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an  extraordinary season and congratulate them for winning the 2023 South Carolina Class AAAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Mike Peake and Coach Angel McGowan.
