A house RESOLUTION

to recognize and honor the members of the Dorchester Free School Board and to congratulate them as they celebrate the milestone of their three hundredth anniversary.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that the Dorchester Free School Board, believed to be the oldest functioning school board in the United States, is celebrating it tricentennial anniversary this year; and

Whereas, when the Colonial Legislature authorized the creation of a free school in the Puritan settlement of Dorchester on the Ashley River, the Dorchester Free School Board was founded in 1724; and

Whereas, the Dorchester Free School Board is still operating in its three hundredth year; and

Whereas, for three centuries, the Dorchester Free School Board has played an important role in the advancement of education and in fostering a commitment to knowledge within its community as the nascent Palmetto State has flourished; and

Whereas, the abiding legacy of the Dorchester Free School Board reflects an unwavering commitment to the principles of equality, access to education, and the belief that knowledge is the foundation of a flourishing society; and

Whereas, in the ongoing struggle to educate its citizens, the Dorchester Free School Board has exhibited determination and the ability to overcome challenges and to provide education in the face of social changes, technological advances, and statewide developments that have spanned three centuries; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives values the enduring work that the Dorchester Free School Board has afforded the members of its community as a means to fulfill their aspirations and afford them opportunities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the members of the Dorchester Free School Board and congratulate them as they celebrate the milestone of their three hundredth anniversary.
