A senate RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THe PROFoUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE South Carolina SENATE UPON THE passing OF CAPTaIN CARLTON CARTER OF CHESTER, A BRAVE AND COURAGEOUS FIREFIGHTER, AND to CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS loving FAMILY AND his MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Captain Carlton Carter of Chester at the age of seventy-four on Saturday, October 28, 2023; and

Whereas, Captain Carter was a twenty-six-year veteran of the Chester City Fire Department and was hired in 1979, after two years as a volunteer firefighter; and

Whereas, always willing to help those in need, Captain Carter served the Chester community unselfishly and with devotion; and

Whereas, throughout his twenty-six years of service, he continuously showed tremendous courage in the face of danger; and

Whereas, Captain Carter took great pride in the fire inspection program and participated in many events, including school presentations and community affairs which gave him the opportunity to speak to the people of Chester about fire safety and prevention; and

Whereas, he made sure that fellow firefighters were safe while reaching fires, and he was greatly loved and respected by fellow firefighters who affectionately called him "Mullet";  and

Whereas, Captain Carter was actively involved in Pleasant View African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church where he was a member of the trustee board; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Shirley, he reared two fine children, Carlton, Jr., and Samontra.  He was their loving father, and they blessed him with the affection of two grandchildren, TJ and CJ; and

Whereas, it is both proper and fitting that the members of the South Carolina Senate should pause in their deliberations to note the passing of this dedicated firefighter and son of the Palmetto State.  Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Captain Carlton Carter of Chester, a brave and courageous firefighter, and convey their deepest sympathy to his loving family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Shirley Carter.
