A house RESOLUTION

 

to EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF Suzanna Carter Foley OF sumter COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.

 

Whereas,  the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Suzanna Carter Foley at the age of fifty-four in Charleston on Monday, April 17, 2023; and

 

Whereas, born in Charleston on January 31, 1969, she was the daughter of Nancy Camp Carter and the late Jacob L. Carter, Jr.  Young Suzanna was reared in Westminster in a loving home with her brother, Jacob L. Carter III, and she graduated in 1987 from West Oak High School where she was active in cheerleading and a member of the golf team; and

 

Whereas, she attended the College of Charleston where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and she completed a bachelor's degree in elementary education at Clemson University.  She earned a master's degree in education administration from the University of South Carolina; and

 

Whereas, Ms. Foley became a proud wife of a United States Air Force soldier when she married Louis J. Foley, Jr.  She accompanied him to his duty station in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she taught at Hope Mills Middle School; and

 

Whereas, when her husband was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, she continued her career in education at Alice Drive Elementary School, serving Sumter children and their parents for twenty-three years as an elementary school teacher, curriculum coach, assistant principal, and ultimately principal; and

 

Whereas, Ms. Foley was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Sorority of Women Educators.  A faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, she served the congregation as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Mary Martha Committee; and

 

Whereas, together with her beloved husband of thirty-three years, she reared two fine daughters, Catherine Bussmann of Greenville and Elizabeth Foley of Sumter.  She was blessed with the affection of a loving granddaughter, Elizabeth "Ellie" Bussmann; and

 

Whereas, Mrs. Foley loved her family deeply and enjoyed gardening, the beach, playing cards, and traveling; and

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Suzanna Foley and for her example of service in educating the young people of the Palmetto State and for the example of kindness she set for all who knew her.  Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Suzanna Carter Foley of Sumter County and extend their deepest sympathy to her loving family and her many friends.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Suzanna Carter Foley.
