A house RESOLUTION

 

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR TONY LEWIS OF CHARLESTON FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES AS HE CONTINUES TO SERVE IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

 

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives recognizes those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to the welfare of this great state's citizenry. Having spent many years serving others, Tony Lewis of Charleston exemplifies such South Carolinians; and

 

Whereas, Tony serves as a community activist, assisting the general public, especially seniors and children of all ages. He is chair of the North Central Community Association, a volunteer with Sunrisers Youth Department of the I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, and assistant to Councilmember Wendell Gilliard in Operation Cool Breeze; and

 

Whereas, Tony has been working with the MOJA Festival Committee for fourteen years. Further, he was founder of Save the Youth, was recognized by Channel 5 Hall of Fame (1997), and served as championship coach for the Rosemont Panthers basketball team (1996-1997). He also was the recipient of the Rosemont Neighborhood Association Outstanding Service Award (1996), served as co-organizer of Toys for Tots basketball games and fundraisers for Inner City (1994), was a member of the Midnight Basketball Association, and was the recipient of the City of Charleston Men's Basketball Award (James Island), as well as of the North Charleston Men's League Award and the Midnight Basketball Award (Inner City League); and

 

Whereas, his dedication to the community keeps him very active serving on additional organizations and committees, including Concerned Citizens of the Peninsula/Lowcountry, Charleston County District 20 Board of Trustees, MUSC Healthcare Workers United, Care Alliance for Fair Employment, Raise Up for 15, Coalition for People United to Take Back Our Community, Quality Education Project, Hootie's Homegrown Roundup, and First Day Festival; and

 

Whereas, moreover, he assisted in obtaining a charter for the Carolina Voyager Charter School. Tony, who is interested in current and future issues concerning the city, has become a strong voice for all who care about education. At present, he is working on a quality report for schools, students, and teachers; and

 

Whereas, his love of sports is evident in his service as vice president and general manager of the Blazing Hawks, a semiprofessional football team; and

 

Whereas, Tony's commitment and zeal in community service have won him the respect and affection of his co-laborers and the citizens of Charleston at large; and

 

Whereas, the members of the House recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like Tony Lewis who use their talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Tony Lewis of Charleston for his many years of dedicated service to his community and extend best wishes as he continues to serve in the days ahead.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Tony Lewis.
