S*592 Session 111 (1995-1996)
S*0592 Concurrent Resolution, By Moore
A Concurrent Resolution to commend the Graniteville Company upon the occasion
of its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary and to express the appreciation of
the General Assembly for the Company's many contributions to Aiken County and
to the State of South Carolina.
03/01/95 Senate Introduced, adopted, sent to House SJ-6
03/02/95 House Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence HJ-6
A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND THE GRANITEVILLE COMPANY UPON THE
OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTIETH
ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXPRESS THE APPRECIATION OF
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE COMPANY'S MANY
CONTRIBUTIONS TO AIKEN COUNTY AND TO THE STATE
OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, one hundred and fifty years ago William Gregg dreamed
of industrializing the agricultural South; and
Whereas, one hundred and fifty years later Gregg's dream can be
seen in the Graniteville Company which is celebrating its
sesquicentennial and honoring its founder as a visionary; and
Whereas, looking back at the company's long history of service and
the thousands of jobs it has provided and still does provide in
Aiken County, it is hard to believe that the Granite Mill, the first
plant, was built only after the state General Assembly passed by one
vote the charter to allow Gregg to incorporate the company; and
Whereas, the Graniteville Company is now the leading domestic
supplier of one hundred percent cotton and polyester-cotton fabrics
for utility wear and sportswear; and
Whereas, today the Graniteville Company generates more than a
half billion dollars in net sales annually; and
Whereas, the company's three thousand seven hundred employees,
or `associates' as they are called by Harold D. (Doug) Kingsmore,
the company's eleventh president and chief executive officer,
produce more than two hundred million yards of cloth annually; and
Whereas, this is enough cloth to wrap around the world four times,
and it is all produced at the company's plants in Aiken County and
at a plant in Augusta. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly commend the
Graniteville Company upon the occasion of its one hundred and
fiftieth anniversary and express their appreciation for the company's
many contributions to Aiken County and to the State of South
Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the employees of the Graniteville Company in care of its president
and chief executive officer, Harold D. Kingsmore.
