A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE HONORABLE MIGNON L. CLYBURN, COMMISSIONER FOR THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON HER SELECTION AS FIRST ACTING CHAIRWOMAN OF THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION.

Whereas, The Honorable Mignon L. Clyburn dedicated fourteen years serving as the publisher and general manager of The Coastal Times, a family-founded, Charleston-based, weekly newspaper focused on issues affecting the African American community; and

Whereas, in 1998, Commissioner Clyburn was sworn in as a member of the sixth district on the South Carolina Public Service Commission (PSC); and

Whereas, Commissioner Clyburn served as the chairwoman for the South Carolina Public Service Commission from July 2002 through June 2004; and

Whereas, on August 3, 2009, Commissioner Clyburn was sworn in as member of the Federal Communications Commission after being nominated by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed by the Senate; and

Whereas, during her first term at the Federal Communications Commission, Commissioner Clyburn chaired the Federal-State Joint Board on Universal Service, the Federal-State Joint Board on Separations, and the Federal-State Joint Conference on Advanced Sciences; and

Whereas, also during her first term at the Federal Communications Commission, Commissioner Clyburn vigilantly worked to protect the interests of consumers while working to strengthen competition among various forms of communication; and

Whereas, in 2009, Commissioner Clyburn was recognized as a Women's History Month Honoree by the National Women's History Project in which Commissioner Clyburn was highlighted as a Woman Taking the Lead to Save our Planet; and

Whereas, following her re-nomination by President Barack Obama and confirmation by the United States Senate to serve her second term on the Federal Communications Commission, Commissioner Clyburn was sworn in as the first acting chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly commend Commissioner Mignon L. Clyburn upon her selection as the first acting chairwoman for the Federal Communications Commission and wish her continued success as a commissioner representing the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor The Honorable Mignon L. Clyburn for her commendable service as commissioner for the Federal Communications Commission, and congratulate her upon her selection as the first acting chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Commissioner Mignon L. Clyburn.
