A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO HONOR THE SELFLESS DEVOTION OF MRS. ANNA MAE
DICKSON OF COLUMBIA TO HER CITY, HER COMMUNITY,
AND ITS CHILDREN, AND TO EXPRESS THE DEEP SORROW
OF THIS STATE AT HER DEATH ON SUNDAY, MAY 17, 1998.
Whereas, Mrs. Anna Mae Dickson of Columbia, widow of J.E.
Dickson, died Sunday, May 17, 1998; and
Whereas, she leaves a legacy of compassionate activism focused on
children and resulting in countless improvements to the Liberty Hill
Community and the Lyon Street Neighborhood; and
Whereas, she spent her lifetime working with ten different Columbia
mayors, effectively using persuasion and persistence to lobby city
officials for change; and
Whereas, as a result of her efforts, St. Anna 's Park was built, staffed,
and equipped; St. Anna's Court, a neighborhood of new single-family
low interest loan-funded homes, replaced local substandard housing;
and she organized the first black Girl Scout Troop in Columbia which
was begun in 1939; and
Whereas, Mrs. Dickson remained active in the Girl Scouts, receiving
the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Congaree Girl Scout
Council in 1994; and
Whereas, she remained involved in local issues, serving as
chairwoman of the block captains in the Lyon Street Community
Association and starting the senior citizens group more than ten years
ago; and
Whereas, the pleasant lady with the ever-present flower in her hair
touched the lives of children and council members, journalists and
jurists, mothers and mayors in her selfless quest to make her world a
better place; and
Whereas, her state, her city, and her community will deeply miss her
dedication. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly honor the selfless
devotion of Mrs. Anna Mae Dickson of Columbia to her city, her
community, and its children, and to express the deep sorrow of this
State at her death on Sunday, May 17, 1998.
