A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF MR. MILTON ALFRED PEARLSTINE, PRESIDENT OF I.M. PEARLSTINE AND SONS, CHARLESTON'S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATED FAMILY BUSINESS.

Whereas, Mr. Milton Alfred Pearlstine died on Thursday, September 8, 1994, at the age of 95 at his home in Charleston; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine was born in 1899 during the post-reconstruction era in South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine served as a member of Mayor John P. Grace's Port Utilities Commission and later as one of the founding board members of the South Carolina Ports Authority serving for some thirty years; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine was instrumental in assisting with the transformation of the port of Charleston from a shipping backwater into the second largest handler of container tonnage on the Atlantic Seaboard and the 17th largest in the world; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine was tireless in his efforts and unequaled in his devotion to public service having secured $21 million worth of state funding to modernize Charleston's waterfront and establish port facilities at Georgetown and Port Royal; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine was a visionary who vigorously fought for the erection of an export grain elevator at the Port of Charleston thereby restoring the port city to its antebellum rice days prosperity and facilitating the growth of the state's soybean industry; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine became a major contributor to the historic preservation of Charleston's rich history when his 1935 philanthropic gift to the city of the nearly-ruined Planters Hotel at the corner of Church and Queen Streets enabled the Dock Street Theater to be constructed behind the historic hotel; and

Whereas, Mr. Pearlstine was a prominent and well respected member of the Charleston business community serving as President of I.M. Pearlstine and Sons, a business started in 1865 by his grandfather and great-grandfather, and reputed to be Charleston's oldest continuously operated family business. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor the memory of Mr. Milton Alfred Pearlstine, President of I.M. Pearlstine and Sons, and express their deepest sympathies for his survivors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Pearlstine's daughter, Ms. Barbara Lemel, at 37 Sussex Road, Charleston, SC, 29407.
