S. 704

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CLYDE MAYES OF GREENVILLE, A DOMINANT FORCE IN FURMAN UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL FROM 1971 TO 1975, ON HIS MANY PreviousATHLETICNext ACCOMPLISHMENTS, BOTH COLLEGE AND PROFESSIONAL, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON HIS MOST RECENT ACCOLADE, INDUCTION INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA PreviousATHLETICNext HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that Clyde Mayes of Greenville, Furman University basketball luminary from 1971 to 1975 and former professional PreviousathleteNext, was inducted into the South Carolina PreviousAthleticNext Hall of Fame on May 12, 2013; and

Whereas, born March 17, 1953, Clyde Clauthen Mayes, Jr., led his high school team, Wade Hampton in Greenville, to two state Class AAAA championships. In each of Clyde's three varsity college seasons, Furman won the Southern Conference crown, and Clyde made the All-League team each season and earned the Most Outstanding Player award twice. He averaged 17.9 points and 12.6 rebounds for his three varsity seasons; and

Whereas, Clyde earned first-team All-America honors from Basketball Weekly and Citizens Savings Foundation, second-team from Sporting News and Converse, and third-team from the Associated Press. The Milwaukee Bucks made Clyde their second-round draft choice, the twenty-second pick overall, and he played for four teams over two seasons in the NBA; and

Whereas, he went on to play in Europe for various teams. His international career took him to Italy, France, and Spain over the course of twelve years, during which the 6-foot 8-inch Greenville native primarily played the power forward position. For 1983-84, he was named an All-Star in Legadue Basket while playing for Alpe Bergamo; and

Whereas, although Clyde's playing career was full of big games, the one most remembered by South Carolinians took place on March 9, 1974, when Clyde Mayes led the Furman Paladins in a 75-67 upset of the USC Gamecocks (then 22-4) in the NCAA Tournament. In that game, the 225-pounder scored 21 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots; and

Whereas, now back in Greenville, Clyde presently serves as GED program coordinator for the Upstate Circle of Friends. In addition, he has worked with Furman Radio, conducted basketball camps, and coached church-league teams; and

Whereas, as GED coordinator for the Upstate Circle of Friends, he helps people get their GED degrees or place them in another appropriate educational program, which he feels is a way for him to give back to the community; and

Whereas, proud of his outstanding PreviousathleticNext career, the Senate takes great pleasure in saluting Clyde Mayes on being named to the 2013 class of inductees into the South Carolina PreviousAthleticNext Hall of Fame, and the members wish him much success in all his future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Clyde Mayes of Greenville, a dominant force in Furman University basketball from 1971 to 1975, on his many PreviousathleticNext accomplishments, both college and professional, and congratulate him on his most recent accolade, induction into the South Carolina PreviousAthletic Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Clyde Mayes.
