 AND ENJOYMENT IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JOHN LEWIS BYRD, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS ELECTION AS A MEMBER OF THE 2014 CLASS TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA ATHLETIC COACHES ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED HAPPINESS AND ENJOYMENT IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that John Lewis Byrd has been elected as a member of the 2014 class to the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, John Byrd had a long and distinguished career as a high school coach in the Palmetto State, coaching football, basketball, and baseball teams at Jefferson, Denmark-Olar, and Andrew Jackson High Schools over a thirty year period; and

Whereas, now retired, his high school basketball coaching career was nothing short of stellar, over which time his teams won a total of 396 games; and

Whereas, three of John Byrd's basketball teams won state championship titles, Jefferson High in 1964 and Andrew Jackson High in 1975 and 1980. Andrew Jackson also was undefeated in 1975; and

Whereas, John Byrd was recognized for his coaching skills in 1975 and 1980 when he was named a South Carolina Basketball Coach of the Year. He also was selected as a regional coach of the year in 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981; and

Whereas, his contributions to high school athletics and to the players he coached extended beyond the court and fields by instilling in hundreds of youth the virtues of discipline, team work, sportsmanship, and dedication, all qualities that are essential to achieving success; and

Whereas, John Byrd is a Lancaster County native, where he lives in the town of Kershaw, and is a graduate of Wofford College; and

Whereas, in 1948, he played in the first South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association North-South All Star basketball game representing Flat Creek High; and

Whereas, John Byrd was selected head coach for the 1969 South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association North-South All Star basketball game; and

Whereas, he is a fifty-three year member of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association; and

Whereas, John Byrd will be inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Greenville at the association's summer convention; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the years that John Byrd devoted to coaching youth in high school athletics; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor John Lewis Byrd upon the occasion of his election as a member of the 2014 class to the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and to wish him continued happiness and enjoyment in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to John Lewis Byrd.
