 CAROLINA THE "COLONEL AND MRS. CHARLES P. MURRAY, JR. BUILDING".

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES NAME ITS HEADQUARTERS BUILDING LOCATED AT 10311 WILSON BOULEVARD, BLYTHEWOOD, SOUTH CAROLINA THE "COLONEL AND MRS. CHARLES P. MURRAY, JR. BUILDING".

Whereas, Colonel Charles P. Murray was born on September 26, 1921, in Baltimore, Maryland; and

Whereas, he was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award that can be bestowed upon a member of the United States Armed Forces; and

Whereas, he earned the award as commander of Company C, 30th Infantry, displaying supreme courage and heroic initiative near Kaysersberg, France on December 16, 1944, while leading a reinforced platoon into enemy territory. By his single-handed attack on an overwhelming force and by his intrepid and heroic fighting, then First Lieutenant Murray stopped a counterattack, established an advance position against formidable odds, and provided an inspiring example for the men of his command; and

Whereas, Colonel Murray received numerous other honors in recognition of his courageous actions, as well as for his longtime support of the Army infantry. In his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, a middle school is named after him. Fort Jackson awarded him the Order of St. Maurice, and American Legion Post 6, where he was a member for three decades, renamed its banquet room in his honor. In addition, Fort Jackson extended recognition to Colonel Murray's devoted wife of sixty-seven years, Anne, in presenting her the Shield of Sparta, which honors spouses for their support of the infantry; and

Whereas, Colonel Murray served in Korea and Vietnam following his World War II service, and accumulated three Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart before retiring from the Army in 1973; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to learn of his death on August 12, 2011, at the age of eighty-nine; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to name the Department of Motor Vehicles' headquarters building in honor of Colonel Murray and his wife as a lasting memorial to this distinguished American hero. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives, concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Motor Vehicles name its headquarters building, located at 10311 Wilson Boulevard, Blythewood, South Carolina the "Colonel and Mrs. Charles P. Murray, Jr. Building".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
