 KEY WEST, FLORIDA.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE COAST GUARD CUTTER METOMPKIN ON ITS SERVICE TO THE CHARLESTON COMMUNITY UPON ITS DEPARTURE TO ITS NEW HOMEPORT OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA.

Whereas, the Coast Guard Cutter Metompkin, the 25th "Island Class" 110-foot patrol boat, was commissioned on January 12, 1989, in Charleston, South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Cutter Metompkin has established a superior record of service throughout the Southeast region and lived up to their motto, "MAUMANEETEANTASS", which is an Indian word meaning "Having great courage on the sea"; and

Whereas, Metompkin has received numerous unit commendations and has been involved in many major operations since its commissioning; and

Whereas, Metompkin's crew has successfully executed many search and rescue cases, saving numerous lives and millions of dollars in property; and

Whereas, Metompkin played an integral role in the Coast Guard's efforts to stem the flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the United States when they deployed to the Caribbean in support of Operation Frontier Shield, Frontier Lance, and Western Caribbean counternarcotic operations; and

Whereas, Metompkin crew members were active in the Charleston community, receiving special recognition from the Secretary of Transportation and the State of South Carolina for operations conducted during Hurricane Hugo and providing numerous tours to hundreds of tourists, schools, and ROTC programs throughout the greater Charleston area, as well as participating in high profile traditional marine events such as the Around Alone and Charleston to Bermuda races; and

Whereas, although the Coast Guard Cutter Metompkin is departing for a new homeport in Key West, Florida, they have made themselves a part of Charleston and will always be remembered as a participating member of the Charleston community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly recognizes the Coast Guard Cutter Metompkin for its service to the Charleston community upon its departure to its new homeport of Key West, Florida.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to CWO3 A. E. Sederstrom, captain of the Coast Guard Cutter Metompkin.
