 OF ONE OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S MOST PROMINENT AND RESPECTED LEADERS, THE
 HONORABLE THOMAS HARRINGTON POPE, JR., OF NEWBERRY COUNTY, FORMER SPEAKER OF
 THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, UPON HIS DEATH DURING THE
 LEGISLATIVE INTERIM.

TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF ONE OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S MOST PROMINENT AND RESPECTED LEADERS, THE HONORABLE THOMAS HARRINGTON POPE, JR., OF NEWBERRY COUNTY, FORMER SPEAKER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, UPON HIS DEATH DURING THE LEGISLATIVE INTERIM.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to learn of the death of the Honorable Thomas Harrington Pope, Jr., of Newberry County on August 23, 1999, at the age of eighty-six; and

Whereas, born on July 28, 1913, at Kinards in Newberry County, he was the son of the late Thomas Harrington Pope, M.D., and Marie Gary Pope; and

Whereas, he was a Distinguished Military Graduate from The Citadel, A.B., 1935, and earned his LL.B. from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1938; and

Whereas, his illustrious list of accomplishments in his lifetime extended in many diverse directions; and

Whereas, well-known and respected as an outstanding lawyer, Mr. Pope practiced law in Newberry County for fifty-seven years; he served as a special Circuit Court Judge and as a member of the South Carolina Judicial Council; he served as President of the Newberry County Bar Association and in 1964, was elected President of the South Carolina Bar Association; and he received the Charlton DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award from the South Carolina Bar Foundation in 1983; and

Whereas, he served his country with honor and courage; during World War II he was a captain in the South Carolina National Guard in a battalion that was mustered into active duty and sent to North Africa under his command in 1942; he received a battlefield promotion from General George Patton; he also served in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy and retired from active duty with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in late 1945. He retired from the South Carolina National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General in 1957; and

Whereas, Mr. Pope has served his State in various capacities with distinction; he represented Newberry County in the House of Representatives from 1937 through 1940 and again, after the war, serving from 1946 through 1950; and from 1949 through 1950, he served as Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives; and

Whereas, Newberry County and its history held a special place in Mr. Pope's heart; he served as the President of the Newberry County Historical Society and authored the two-volume work, "The History of Newberry County"; among his many civic duties, he served as a Director of the Newberry Opera House Foundation and played a major role in raising the funds to renovate the Opera House; and

Whereas, he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Newberry College and the University of South Carolina presented him with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993; and

Whereas, Thomas Pope, Jr., was a long-time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Newberry; and

Whereas, he was married to the former Mary Waties Lumpkin; together they had three children, Mary Waties Pope Kennedy of Columbia, Thomas Harrington Pope III of Newberry, and Gary Tusten Pope of Chapin; and nine grandchildren, Robert Hunter Kennedy III, Thomas Harrington Pope Kennedy, Mary Sumter Waties Pope Kennedy, William Harrington Pope, Jane Brooks Marshall Pope, Helen Harrington Pope, Gary Tusten Pope, Jr., Elizabeth Christian Pope, and Ann Stelling Pope; and

Whereas, Thomas Pope, Jr., was an outstanding leader in his community and his State, and he will be sorely missed. Now therefore,

Be it resolved, by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina extend their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of one of the Palmetto State's most prominent and respected leaders, the Honorable Thomas Harrington Pope, Jr., of Newberry County, former Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, upon his death during the legislative interim.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of the Honorable Thomas H. Pope, Jr.
