A SENATE RESOLUTION TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MR. STAN CORWIN OF MAYO FOR
ACCOMPLISHING THE GREAT FEAT OF SAILING AROUND THE WORLD FOR THE THIRD TIME AT
THE AGE OF SIXTY-NINE AND WISH HIM MANY MORE SUCCESSFUL ODYSSEYS IN THE
 FUTURE.

04/11/01 Senate Introduced and adopted SJ-4

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MR. STAN CORWIN OF MAYO FOR ACCOMPLISHING THE GREAT FEAT OF SAILING AROUND THE WORLD FOR THE THIRD TIME AT THE AGE OF SIXTY-NINE AND WISH HIM MANY MORE SUCCESSFUL ODYSSEYS IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina are proud to recognize Stan Corwin of Mayo for successfully completing his third voyage of sailing around the world on February 24, 2001; and

Whereas, Stan Corwin has always been around water and learned to sail on the lakes in Michigan where he grew up. He was also in the Navy during the Korean War and retired from service after thirty years; and

Whereas, Stan Corwin and his wife, Virginia, began their journey in September 1998, in their thirty-six foot sailboat, "Serendipity," and a smaller boat, "Bout Time Baby." Corwin is a licensed master sailor and, despite Virginia's blindness, she was a world-class sailor; and

Whereas, the Corwins would sail for about thirty days and then fly back home to Mayo for a week and then resume their journey. The couple made their last trip home together in March 1999, when Mrs. Corwin became ill. Sadly, she died that December; and

Whereas, Stan Corwin, knowing that his wife wanted him to complete the trip, set out again two weeks after her death. He spent a total of four hundred twenty days at sea during his two year, five month voyage; and

Whereas, after returning home, he is finishing a manuscript entitled "The Sea and Me," in which he talks about things that happened at sea. He has also written a research paper called "The Psychology of the Ocean Sailor," which explores loneliness at sea and is currently speaking to groups about his experiences; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are awed by the courage that Stan Corwin displayed in sailing around the world for the third time at the age of sixty-nine and continuing his most recent journey despite losing his beloved wife during the period of the trip. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Mr. Stan Corwin of Mayo for accomplishing the great feat of sailing around the world for the third time at the age of sixty-nine and wish him many more successful odysseys in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Corwin.
