VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

3/5/2008

H. 4810

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA TROOP 74, OF LANCASTER COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING, AND TO COMMEND THE TROOP AND ITS LEADERS FOR THEIR MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE KERSHAW COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Boy Scouts of America Troop 74, of Lancaster County, recently celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its founding; and

Whereas, chartered on September 1, 1957, the troop reached its fiftieth anniversary in September 2007 and celebrated this important milestone as a troop on December 31, 2007; and

Whereas, in commemoration of the event, Troop 74 will have a special recognition celebration on March 30, 2008, at Kershaw Second Baptist Church, the troop's sponsor since its initial charter; and

Whereas, Troop 74 names among recent accomplishments its qualification for the 2007 Centennial Quality Unit Award. In addition, since 1965, which is as far back as the Palmetto Council's records go, the troop has had at least fifty-one members achieve the elite status of Eagle Scout; and

Whereas, the troop has performed numerous service projects over the years, most recently the renovation of the historic James Ingram Cemetery in Heath Springs. Troop 74 cleared away dead wood and brambles left in the wake of Hurricane Hugo and other storms, cleaned and primed the cemetery's wrought-iron fence, repaired and set up broken tombstones, made headstones for four unmarked graves they discovered, and planted crepe myrtles on the site; and

Whereas, for another favorite service project, in response to the expressed desire of Kershaw Elementary School, the boys bought statues of South Carolina's state symbols and installed them in the front of the school, created a garden there, and built picnic tables for the area; and

Whereas, in accordance with the mission of the Boy Scouts of America and to the end that these young men may become responsible, participating citizens and leaders, Troop 74 and its leaders work together to prepare members to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law; and

Whereas, for nearly a century, the Boy Scouts have been representative of all that is best in America's youth. The House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the young men of Troop 74, who since 1957 have shown themselves worthy to bear the respected name of their organization in the Kershaw community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Boy Scouts of America Troop 74, of Lancaster County, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its founding, and commend the troop and its leaders for their many years of service to the Kershaw community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to David Shores, scoutmaster, and Odell "Nick" Lucas, past scoutmaster and current strong supporter of Troop 74.
