 Authority for sixty years of continuous and expanding services to the
 community at-large and its substantial contributions to improving the lives of
 its residents.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE COLUMBIA HOUSING AUTHORITY FOR SIXTY YEARS OF CONTINUOUS AND EXPANDING SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY AT-LARGE AND ITS SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF ITS RESIDENTS.

Whereas, The Columbia Housing Authority was promulgated by unanimous vote of the Columbia City Council on April 10, 1934, in response to a congressional mandate as well as the pressing need for housing in the immediate area; and

Whereas, The Columbia Housing Authority has contributed to the greater Columbia area through programs such as the Pepsi Rookie League Baseball Program by providing constructive activities and positive role models for 270 of the city's youth, in conjunction with the Capital City Bombers and the City of Columbia; and

Whereas, in concert with the Columbia Police Department, the Housing Authority has made strides in creating safer housing communities for its residents in addition to directly bringing police officers into the communities in order to establish a rapport between residents and law enforcement; and

Whereas, The Columbia Housing Authority has instituted a variety of programs, including scholarship and training programs, designed to ensure that the youth in its communities are encouraged to complete their education and continue at a post-secondary institution; and

Whereas, The Columbia Housing Authority, through its innovative programs and commitment to quality public housing, is contributing toward the preservation of cohesive families and communities that are essential to stability and prosperity. Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That this sixty-year history of outstanding service to the community is hereby recognized; the residents, staff, and Commissioners of The Columbia Housing Authority are commended for their continued dedication and the month of April is proclaimed Housing Month for the City of Columbia.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Tracie Barnes of the Columbia Housing Authority.
