RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING THE HONORABLE JAMES (JIM) ROBERT
MELTON, SENATE SERGEANT AT ARMS OF THE STATE OF
SOUTH CAROLINA, RICHLAND COUNTY, ON BEING NAMED
PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE SERVICES AND
SECURITY ASSOCIATION.
Whereas, the Honorable James Robert Melton, Senate Sergeant at
Arms, has been named President of the National Legislative Services
and Security Association (NLSSA); and
Whereas, Jim has been active in this association since 1981, serving
as vice president from 1990 until the middle of 1993, and has served
on the executive board since 1983; and
Whereas, NLSSA is one of nine professional associations or
"staff sections" of the National Conference of State
Legislatures; and
Whereas, this association consists of Sergeants at Arms, security
personnel, and support services staff for state legislatures from all over
the United States; and
Whereas, Jim has traveled to various other states, at their request, to
share his knowledge and expertise in the area of security; and
Whereas, Jim Melton has always had the underlying philosophy to
ensure that all of the logistical services which are provided to the
members of the South Carolina State Senate, their staff, and the
public, function well; and
Whereas, Sergeant Melton has trained and maintained an excellent
group of Deputy Sergeants at Arms to assist him in this sometimes
trying and challenging position; and
Whereas, Jim maintains order, protects the Senate, and its occupants,
dealing with visiting constituents, serving committees of the Senate,
as well as constantly striving to please everyone with whom he daily
comes in contact; and
Whereas, the Senate is very proud and honored to have a man such as
Sergeant Jim Melton with his knowledge and expertise in charge of
Senate Security, the well-being of the Senators of the State of South
Carolina, and staff in the Gressette Senate Office Building. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates James (Jim) Robert Melton,
Senate Sergeant at Arms of the State of South Carolina, Richland
County, on being named President of the National Legislative Services
and Security Association.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to
James (Jim) Robert Melton.
