A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO SALUTE AND RECOGNIZE THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE PORTS AUTHORITY AS A VALUABLE STATE RESOURCE UPON THE OCCASION OF "STATE PORTS AUTHORITY DAY" ON FEBRUARY 11, 1998.

Whereas, "State Ports Authority Day" on February 11, 1998, will celebrate South Carolina's strong maritime heritage in its three booming port cities, Charleston, Georgetown and Port Royal; and

Whereas, the mission of the South Carolina State Ports Authority is to contribute to the economic development of the State of South Carolina by fostering and stimulating waterborne commerce and shipment of freight; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority is a leader in international trade generating more than 83,000 jobs, $13 billion in wages and sales and $314 million in tax revenue for South Carolina every year; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority handled more than 12 million tons of cargo and received $24 billion dollars of total shipments in 1997; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority exports over $3 billion in South Carolina manufactured products every year to markets around the world; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority's largest port, the Port of Charleston, is currently the nation's fourth largest container port and sixth nationally in the value of goods shipped; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority is relied upon by more than seven hundred South Carolina companies from every county in our State; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority's plan for harbor deepening and new terminal development on Daniel Island in Charleston Harbor will bolster South Carolina's position as a leader in the global economy; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority, as a global leader in world trade, continues to increase investment, create revenue and provide new jobs for the people of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the South Carolina State Ports Authority, over its fifty-five year history, has set the standard for growth, leadership, vision and excellence. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, would like to publicly salute and recognize the South Carolina State Ports Authority as a valuable state resource upon the occasion of "State Ports Authority Day" on February 11, 1998.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to President and CEO, Bernard S. Groseclose, Jr., and Chairman, William L. Bethea, Jr.
