A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING DR. SAMUEL O. SCHUMANN, SR., OF BERKELEY COUNTY FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER AS A DEDICATED AND CARING PHYSICIAN, AND CONGRATULATING HIM ON THE OCCASION OF HAVING SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2002, PROCLAIMED "DR. SAMUEL O. SCHUMANN, SR., DAY" IN ST. STEPHEN, SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Dr. Samuel O. Schumann, Sr., and his family moved to St. Stephen, South Carolina in 1954, where he provided much needed medical services for the Russellville Lumber Company for more than two and a half years; and

Whereas, Dr. Schumann opened his private medical practice in St. Stephen, South Carolina in 1956, where he was the only physician serving the entire northern Berkeley County region for many years; and

Whereas, for nearly five decades, Dr. Schumann has contributed greatly of his time, energy, and expertise to the people of St. Stephen and surrounding areas, making innumerable house calls, providing lifesaving emergency medical treatment, and delivering countless newborns, many of whom now have children of their own; and

Whereas, Dr. Schumann's close association with leading educational, professional, and civic organizations enabled him to recognize more than twenty years ago the profound need for a state of the art Emergency Medical Services Unit in St. Stephen; and

Whereas, due in large measure to the efforts and foresight of Dr. Schumann, the St. Stephen EMS unit began operations in 1979, and has saved unknown numbers of lives by having emergency care and transportation available twenty-four hours a day; and

Whereas, in appreciation of his forty-eight years of dedication to the people of St. Stephen and surrounding communities, the Town of St. Stephen has proclaimed Sunday, March 3, 2002, as "Dr. Samuel O. Schumann, Sr., Day" in St. Stephen, South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend Dr. Samuel O. Schumann, Sr., of Berkeley County for his distinguished career as a dedicated and caring physician, and congratulate him on the occasion of having Sunday, March 3, 2002, proclaimed "Dr. Samuel O. Schumann, Sr., Day" in St. Stephen, South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Samuel O. Schumann, Sr. of St. Stephen.
