A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE THE COLUMBIA STAR NEWSPAPER AS AN
EXEMPLARY FAMILY BUSINESS AND ITS OWNERS, DR.
WARNER M. MONTGOMERY AND MIMI M. MADDOCK, AND
TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS IN
THE AREA OF COMMUNITY JOURNALISM.
Whereas, The Star Reporter was established in 1963 as a newspaper
of general distribution in Columbia, South Carolina, by Harold
Booker, Mary Booker, and W. Miller Montgomery; and
Whereas, The Star Reporter has continued as a successfully
locally-owned business for 35 years; and
Whereas, with the deaths of Harold Booker and W. Miller
Montgomery and the retirement of Mary Booker, the ownership of
The Star Reporter was transferred to Dr. Warner M. Montgomery and
Mimi M. Maddock; and
Whereas, The Star Reporter has been an active member of the South
Carolina Press Association for 35 years and has received numerous
journalistic awards; and
Whereas, on the 35th anniversary of The Star Reporter, the owners
have changed the name of the newspaper to The Columbia Star,
moved to a new location, and changed the size and format of the
newspaper so as to better serve the citizens of Columbia. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That The Columbia Star be honored as an exemplary family business
and its owners, Dr. Warner M. Montgomery and Mimi M. Maddock,
be congratulated for their achievements in the area of community
journalism.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. Warner M. Montgomery and Mimi M. Maddock.
