A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING WALKER-GAMBLE ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL, OF NEW ZION, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON BEING
SELECTED BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE COUNCIL OF
THE INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION AS THE
EXEMPLARY READING AWARDS WINNER FOR THE 1996-97
SCHOOL YEAR.
Whereas, the General Assembly has long since recognized that a
person who does not read is no better off than a person who cannot
read; that reading, together with a good, solid education, is
absolutely essential to developing insight, understanding, and
tolerance, despite differences in custom, culture, ideas, and opinions
among peoples of varying backgrounds; and that such insight,
understanding, and tolerance, in turn, lead to justice, peace, and, most
importantly, respect for the dignity of every human being; and
Whereas, during recent visits to Walker-Gamble Elementary School,
New Zion, South Carolina, by the South Carolina Council of the
International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Committee,
it was determined that the teachers, faculty, and staff of
Walker-Gamble Elementary School, under the able leadership of
Miss Connie J. Dennis, Principal, and with the cooperation and
support of many parents, business interests, and the entire New Zion
community, were providing a truly outstanding reading program that
served to enrich the student body in a way that permeated the entire
school; and
Whereas, by virtue of the joint and genuinely cooperative efforts of
those responsible for this truly outstanding and enriching reading
program at Walker-Gamble Elementary School, New Zion, South
Carolina, the school and its student body were selected by the South
Carolina State Council of the International Reading Association as
the Exemplary Reading Awards Winner for the school year 1996-97;
and
Whereas, Walker-Gamble Elementary School was recognized and
awarded a plaque for its achievements in reading by the South
Carolina State Council of the International Reading Association at its
recent annual convention, a signal honor in itself, and will receive
further recognition, honors, and yet another plaque for its outstanding
reading accomplishments and program at the International Reading
Association's Awards Celebration to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, in
May, 1997. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates Walker-Gamble Elementary School, New
Zion, South Carolina, its talented students, teachers, faculty, and
staff, together with parents, business interests, and the entire New
Zion community that supported and made this outstanding reading
program possible, on the occasion of Walker-Gamble Elementary
School being selected by the South Carolina State Council of the
International Reading Association as its Exemplary Reading Awards
Winner for the 1996-97 school year.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
