TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND SHERMAN A. JAMES, PH.D., THE DUKE UNIVERSITY "SUSAN B. KING PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC POLICY STUDIES", FOR HIS OUTSTANDING WORK IN THE AREAS OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, POVERTY AND PUBLIC POLICY, AND RACIAL AND ETHNIC HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND TO WELCOME HIM BACK TO SOUTH CAROLINA AS HE PRESENTS THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT THE SOUTH CAROLINA AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE COMMISSION'S "PRESERVING OUR PLACES IN HISTORY IN THE PEE DEE".

Whereas, Dr. Sherman A. James, a native of Hartsville and a 1960 graduate of Butler High School, is the son of the late Jerome James and Mrs. Helen James; and

Whereas, Dr. James, a social epidemiologist, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Talladega College in Alabama and his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; and

Whereas, Dr. James has a long and distinguished career in academia and is currently the Susan B. King Professor of Public Policy Studies in the Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy. Dr. James has done extensive research on African-American health issues, and focuses on the social determinants of racial and ethnic health inequalities and community-based and public policy interventions designed to minimize, and ultimately eliminate, these inequalities; and

Whereas, Dr. James was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2000. In 2001, he received the Abraham Lilienfeld Award from the Epidemiology section of the American Public Health Association for career excellence in the teaching of epidemiology. He is a fellow of the American Epidemiological Society, the American College of Epidemiology, the American Heart Association, and the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research; he is president-elect of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Public Health; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such a distinguished native son as Dr. James and wish to extend to him a warm welcome back to South Carolina and the Pee Dee. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution recognize and commend Sherman A. James, Ph.D., the Duke University "Susan B. King Professor of Public Policy Studies", for his outstanding work in the areas of epidemiology, poverty and public policy, and racial and ethnic health disparities, and to welcome him back to South Carolina as he presents the key note address at the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission's "Preserving Our Places in History in the Pee Dee".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Sherman A. James, Ph.D.
