 NATURAL RESOURCES OF LEE COUNTY IN HIS ROLE AS COMMISSIONER AND CHAIRMAN OF
 THE LEE COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT.

TO JOIN HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY AT DEDICATION CEREMONIES IN LEE STATE PARK IN CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF THE LATE R. W. "BOB" MERCK OF LEE COUNTY AND HIS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE TO PRESERVING THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF LEE COUNTY IN HIS ROLE AS COMMISSIONER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE LEE COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT.

Whereas, the late R. W. "Bob" Merck of Lee County will be honored at Lee State Park on Sunday, March 12, 2000, for his twenty-five years of service to the Lee County Soil and Conservation District, generally, and Lee State Park, specifically; and

Whereas, through his efforts, the Park was the grantee of substantial funding from the United States Department of Agriculture--Natural Resources Conservation Service through its Wetlands Conservation Program; and

Whereas, those funds have made it possible for Lee Park to accomplish many of its objectives, which until recently were only dreams, including the development of an environmental learning center; and

Whereas, this man who honored the land also loved the sky, spending twenty-three years in the South Carolina Air National Guard after serving as a jet pilot in the Korean War, the Berlin Crisis, and the Vietnam War; and

Whereas, he combined his devotion to the land and the air in a forty-five year career as an aerial crop sprayer; and

Whereas, his greatest joy was derived from his family. He and his wife of forty-four years, Betty Shaw Merck, were the loving parents of a son, Warren, and a daughter, Wendi. Warren and Kristie Merck and Dana and Wendi Wolfe presented him with four grandchildren, Chesley and Chandler Merck and Taylor and Brian Wolfe; and

Whereas, this man of the land and sky was also a Mason and a Shriner and served as deacon and Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church; and

Whereas, his contributions to his community, to the State of South Carolina, and to the nation are rightfully acknowledged by his family and friends. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly join his friends and family at dedication ceremonies in Lee State Park in celebrating the life of the late R. W. "Bob" Merck of Lee County and his twenty-five years of service to preserving the natural resources of Lee County in his role as commissioner and chairman of the Lee County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to his family.
