A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. MADELINE C. MCMILLION, PRINCIPAL OF ST. PETER'S CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN COLUMBIA, UPON HER RETIREMENT AND TO COMMEND HER FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE, WISE COUNSEL, AND STEADY GUIDANCE TO THE STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF AT ST. PETER'S SCHOOL AND TO WISH HER GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mrs. Madeline C. McMillion has been the Principal of St. Peter's Catholic School in Columbia for the past fourteen years and brings her tenure to a close June 30, 2007; and

Whereas, she has been instrumental in maintaining St. Peter's high standards of excellence by adhering to the guidelines and expectations set forth by both the Diocese of Charleston and the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, which has accredited the school for the last thirty-seven years; and

Whereas, Mrs. McMillion has built a faculty fully certified by the State, making her the envy of her peers. She has brought the musical arts to St. Peter's and the entire school family through forging a relationship with the University of South Carolina's Music Department; and

Whereas, she has worked tirelessly to establish good relationships with the parents of all students, and she has worked unceasingly to spread faith across the curriculum; and

Whereas, Mrs. McMillion has upheld St. Peter's unparalleled position within the community, and particularly with the school's downtown neighbors where she and St. Peter's are held in high esteem; and

Whereas, Mrs. McMillion has set the bar high for herself, her faculty, the parents and the students of St. Peter's and, for this, she leaves a lasting legacy; and

Whereas, earlier in her career, Mrs. McMillion served in the Peace Corp in Liberia, West Africa, where she established the Peace Corps Public Heath Program for Liberia and where she met and married her husband, Huston, a Peace Corp teacher; and

Whereas, prior to becoming Principal of St. Peter's, Mrs. McMillion taught in the Chapin Public Schools for fourteen years, where she also was active in a wide range of community activities, including serving on the board of the Chapin Community Theatre and Shakespeare in the Park and serving as the head of the Friends of Liberia education subcommittee; and

Whereas, the McMillion's are the parents of John, who is married to Denny, and Geoff, who is married to Bridget, and they are the proud grandparents of Ella and Gordon; and

Whereas, both Mrs. McMillion and her husband are looking forward to retirement, traveling, and spending time enjoying their children and grandchildren; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the Senate to pause in their deliberations to recognize and honor such an outstanding educator and administrator as Mrs. Madeline McMillion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs.
