TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF ANGELA PHIPPS OF LANCASTER UPON HER TRAGIC DEATH IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT ON THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1991.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death in an automobile accident on Thursday, May 16, 1991, of Angela Phipps of Lancaster, an eighteen-year old senior at Lancaster High School; and
Whereas, Angela Phipps was a young lady who excelled in all areas of her life whether school, church, civic, or community endeavors; and
Whereas, at Lancaster High School she received numerous honors and awards including the following:
(1) First Place Winner in Public Speaking -- Honors Day;
(2) Honors Bowl Academic Challenge for two years;
(3) Captain of 1991 Honors Day Team;
(4) Winner of Critical Thinking Award, 1989;
(5) Yearbook Award, 1988;
(6) History Award, 1989; and
Whereas, she was named an Erskine Scholar, a Clemson Junior Education Scholar, was listed in Who's Who Among High School Students, was a Congressional Youth Leadership Scholar, was named an Outstanding High School Student of America, and participated in the Winthrop Academic Challenge; and
Whereas, she also was a leader among her peer group in numerous church and community activities. She participated in community theater productions for over ten years and also with the Lancaster High School Players, was the director of the children's choir at the First Presbyterian Church among many other activities, organized the summer 1991 Habitat for Humanity Mission, and won the 1986 first place award in the Rainbow Girls Grand Assembly with the subject of patriotism; and
Whereas, this tragic accident took the life of this truly outstanding teenager one week shy of her high school graduation and three months shy of the beginning of her college career at the College of Charleston; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to extend to her parents, family, and friends their sincerest and heartfelt condolences in this time of sorrow upon their devastating loss. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby express their deepest sympathy to the family of Angela Phipps of Lancaster upon her tragic death in an automobile accident on Thursday, May 16, 1991.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald C. Phipps.
