A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MAYOR HARRY ODELL WEEKS OF AIKEN UPON HIS RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED LEADERSHIP, AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Harry Odell Weeks is retiring as Mayor of Aiken; and

Whereas, a native of Aiken, Mayor Weeks was born August 3, 1908. He graduated from the Aiken Institute in 1926 and Clemson College in 1930; and

Whereas, Mayor Weeks served as Mayor from 1946 to 1952 when he did not offer for reelection. He was a city council member from 1955 to 1956 when he served as Mayor Pro Tempore. He was elected Mayor again in 1957 and has served continuously since; and

Whereas, Mr. Weeks served as a member of the Board of Directors and as President of the South Carolina Municipal Association. He currently serves on the Lower Savannah Regional Planning Council Board of Directors where he has been since 1971; and

Whereas, Mayor Weeks is vice-president of Lyon-Croft-Weeks and Hunter, has been chosen as the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, and has received the Aiken Toastmasters' Communicator of the Year Award and the Aiken Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award; and

Whereas, his other numerous honors include the Board of Visitors, Clemson University; IPTAY Clemson Representative for Aiken County for forty-six years; former IPTAY County Chairman; Ten Gallon Donor Blood for the American Red Cross; Donor Aiken County Red Cross Blood Program; Charter Member and Past President of the Aiken Lions Club; and member of the Woodmen of the World, Elks, Masons, Shriners, Aiken Business Men's Club, and Senior Men's Club. He also is an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club; and

Whereas, a member of the First Baptist Church in Aiken, Mayor Weeks and his deceased wife, the former Ella Byers of Petersburg, Virginia, raised three fine children: H. O. Weeks, Jr., of Aiken, Thomas Weeks of Barnwell, and Jane Anderson of Lexington; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate wish to join Aiken County in thanking Mayor Weeks for his many years of service not only as Mayor but as a loyal citizen devoted to his community and his fellow man. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate recognize Mayor Harry Odell Weeks of Aiken upon his retirement, commend him for his many years of dedicated leadership, and wish him well in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mayor Weeks.
