A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE COLUMBIA METS FOR WINNING THE 1991 SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP AND TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION OF WHOLESOME FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT TO THE RESIDENTS OF THIS STATE.

Whereas, the Columbia Mets capped the 1991 season by winning the South Atlantic League Championship; and

Whereas, the Mets finished the regular season winning the last twelve of their final fourteen games; and

Whereas, they led the South Atlantic League with a season batting average of .265 and with a 2.92 earned run average were only second to Charleston; and

Whereas, they won the first half South Atlantic League Southern Division title with a 47-24 record; and

Whereas, after defeating the Macon Braves for the second half division title in two games in a best of three series, they faced the Charleston Wheelers, an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds; and

Whereas, the Mets swept the League championship by shutting out the Wheelers with a 3-0 in the best of five series; and

Whereas, this is the second time the Mets have taken the League title, with their first championship in 1986 when they defeated the Asheville Tourists, a Houston affiliate; and

Whereas, since 1983, their inaugural season, the Columbia Mets have provided South Carolina residents, and especially the Midlands, with high caliber, exciting baseball; wholesome and enjoyable entertainment for families and fans of all ages; and

Whereas, it is fitting for the General Assembly to congratulate the Columbia Mets for their outstanding season. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Columbia Mets for their sweeping victory over the Charleston Wheelers to win the 1991 South Atlantic League Championship and thank the team, its management, and owners for providing the residents of South Carolina with wholesome and enjoyable family entertainment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Columbia Mets, 500 South Assembly St., Columbia, South Carolina 29201.
