A BILL

TO PROVIDE FOR THE ELECTION OF A HAMPTON COUNTY VETERANS AFFAIRS OFFICER AND PROVIDE THAT AN ELECTION IS NOT REQUIRED WHEN ONLY ONE QUALIFIED CANDIDATE OFFERS FOR THE OFFICE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Between May first and June first of each odd-numbered year, all posts or chapters of nationally organized and recognized organizations of war veterans in Hampton County shall hold an election to nominate a county veterans affairs officer for the next term. That notice of election must be published once a week for the three successive weeks immediately before the date of the election. Any run-off election must be held one week before the first election. The person receiving a majority of the votes cast is nominated. The commander of the posts or chapters holding the election shall certify his name to the Hampton County Legislative Delegation within fifteen days after the results of the election are determined. All honorably-discharged veterans and all unmarried widows of honorably-discharged veterans residing in Hampton County, regardless of any affiliation with a veterans' service organization, are entitled to vote. If only one qualified candidate offers for the office of county veterans affairs officer, the election provided in this act may not be held and the candidate must be certified to the Hampton County Legislative Delegation as elected. The veterans affairs officer shall maintain the same office hours as other county officers and devote full time to the duties of his office.

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
