A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE CITY OF HARTSVILLE ON THE OCCASION OF ITS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS IN APRIL COMMUNITY EVENT WHERE HOMES OF THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED ARE REPAIRED IN A COMMON EFFORT TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED AND TO COMMEND EACH OF THE BUSINESSES, CHURCHES, CIVIC GROUPS, AND INDIVIDUALS WHO DONATE THEIR TIME, TALENTS, AND MONEY TO THIS WORTHY PROJECT.

Whereas, Christmas in April in Hartsville which will be held this year on April 20, 1991, is an annual one-day massive effort to repair homes of the poor, elderly and handicapped, and unites people of all faiths and walks of life in a common effort to help people in need; and

Whereas, the City of Hartsville has achieved national acclaim as a leader in the Christmas in April effort in the two years since this outstanding program began in Hartsville. As a result of its efforts, Time magazine in its December 17, 1990, edition featured Hartsville's Christmas in April program; and

Whereas, in April, 1989, over eight hundred volunteers repaired twenty-eight homes in Hartsville's Howard Street neighborhood. In April, 1990, over one thousand five hundred workers fixed thirty-eight houses in the Alphabet Street area off Society Avenue; and

Whereas, the program is sponsored locally by the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, and Hartsville area businesses, churches, and civic groups provide the volunteers who coordinate the project and do all repair work; and

Whereas, the 1991 Christmas in April is scheduled for Saturday, April 20. Homes in Hartsville's Oakdale section and in a second area off South Eighth Street will be targeted for repair; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and commend this fine South Carolina city and the countless volunteers involved with this project on the occasion of the upcoming 1991 Christmas in April effort and for all that they have accomplished in past efforts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend the City of Hartsville on the occasion of its annual Christmas in April community event where homes of the economically disadvantaged are repaired in a common effort to help people in need and further commend each of the businesses, churches, civic groups, and individuals who donate their time, talents, and money to this worthy project.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Mayor of Hartsville.
