A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE CONGREGATION OF TEMPLE BETH ELOHIM IN CHARLESTON UPON THE CELEBRATION OF THEIR 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SANCTUARY'S DEDICATION.

Whereas, the congregation of Temple Beth Elohim in Charleston will celebrate the 150th anniversary of their sanctuary's dedication; and

Whereas, Temple Beth Elohim was the first Reform Synagogue in the United States; and

Whereas, the Greek Revival sanctuary was dedicated in March, 1841, and is recognized as the oldest Jewish house of worship in continuous use in the United States; and

Whereas, it is the oldest surviving Reform synagogue in the world; and

Whereas, the building survived the Civil War, the Charleston earthquake in 1886, and Hurricane Hugo; and

Whereas, Temple Beth Elohim is recognized as a National Historic Landmark of the United States. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the congregation of Temple Beth Elohim in Charleston on the celebration of the 150th anniversary of their sanctuary's dedication.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rabbi William A. Rosenthall.
