A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE LIBRARY FOR SPONSORING A "READ-IN" ON THE STATE HOUSE GROUNDS ON APRIL 17, 1991 -- A PRO-LITERACY EVENT CELEBRATING THE IMPORTANCE AND JOY OF READING IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES.

Whereas, the Governor has proclaimed 1991 as the "Year of the Lifetime Reader" in South Carolina; and

Whereas, in commemoration of this special year and in conjunction with National Library Week and School Library Media Month, the South Carolina State Library is sponsoring a "Read-In" on the State House grounds on the morning of Wednesday, April 17, 1991; and

Whereas, more than one thousand students from around the State are expected to take part in this pro-literacy event which celebrates the importance and joy of reading in our everyday lives; and

Whereas, the "Read-In" provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the many young people who are experiencing the excitement found in books; and

Whereas, with efforts like these, a new generation of South Carolinians will discover that books can be their best friends for a lifetime; and

Whereas, the State Library's continuing efforts to eradicate illiteracy are an example of this outstanding agency's overall excellence and its dedication to the citizens of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends the South Carolina State Library for sponsoring a "Read-In" on the State House grounds on April 17, 1991 -- a pro-literacy event celebrating the importance and joy of reading in our everyday lives.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to James B. Johnson, Jr., Director, South Carolina State Library, P.O. Box 11469, Columbia, South Carolina 29211.
