A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 44-66-20, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO DEFINITIONS IN THE ADULT HEALTH CARE CONSENT ACT, SO AS TO EXCLUDE THE WITHHOLDING OR WITHDRAWAL OF LIFE SUSTAINING PROCEDURES, NUTRITION, AND HYDRATION FROM THE DEFINITION OF HEALTH CARE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 44-66-20(1) of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 472 of 1990, is amended to read:

"(1) `Health care' means a procedure to diagnose or treat a human disease, ailment, defect, abnormality, or complaint, whether of physical of mental origin; it does not include withholding or withdrawal of life sustaining procedures, nutrition, or hydration."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
