A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING MAYOR H. ODELL WEEKS OF AIKEN FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEVOTED PUBLIC SERVICE AND WISHING HIM MUCH HAPPINESS IN HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the Honorable H. Odell Weeks has served as Mayor of Aiken for forty years, holding the record for service among South Carolina mayors; and

Whereas, Mayor Weeks, eighty-three years old, was elected to city council in the early 1940's and became the city's chief executive in 1946 when his predecessor died in office; and

Whereas, he served as mayor until 1952, then served as a city council member again for four years, was reelected mayor in 1957, and held the top job since; and

Whereas, he was very highly regarded as mayor and was well-known, respected, and admired throughout the State; and

Whereas, his devotion, dedication, and concern for the city and the people of Aiken made him long ago a truly beloved public servant; and

Whereas, he chose to retire as mayor in 1991 rather than seek another term in office; and

Whereas, his outstanding service and excellent guidance and direction will be missed greatly. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Mayor H. Odell Weeks of Aiken for his many years of devoted public service and wishes him much happiness in his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable H. Odell Weeks at Aiken.
