TO APPROVE REGULATIONS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION, RELATING TO EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM, DEFINED MINIMUM PROGRAM FOR SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL DISTRICTS, DESIGNATED AS REGULATION DOCUMENT NUMBER 1486, PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF ARTICLE 1, CHAPTER 23, TITLE 1 OF THE 1976 CODE.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The regulations of the Board of Education, relating to experimental program, defined minimum program for South Carolina school districts, designated as Regulation Document Number 1486, and submitted to the General Assembly pursuant to the provisions of Article 1, Chapter 23, Title 1 of the 1976 Code, are approved.
SECTION 2. This joint resolution takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
SUMMARY AS SUBMITTED BY PROMULGATING AGENCY.
The proposed amendment will allow school districts flexibility in offering elective courses. Twenty units are required for a South Carolina High School Diploma. Of these twenty, thirteen are required core courses and seven are considered electives. Courses developed at the state or local level outside of the approved list or state-adopted textbooks are considered experimental and must presently be approved through a rigorous, time-consuming, and paper laden process.
