A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND RICHLAND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND ITS HEART CENTER FOR THE OUTSTANDING CARE IT PROVIDES TO PATIENTS IN THE MIDLANDS REGION AND THROUGHOUT SOUTH CAROLINA WHO SUFFER FROM HEART DISEASE ON THE OCCASION OF NATIONAL HEART MONTH DURING FEBRUARY.

Whereas, the month of February is National Heart Month throughout the United States; and

Whereas, South Carolina is unfortunately a national leader in terms of the percentage of its citizens who suffer from heart disease; and

Whereas, one person in four suffers from some type of heart disease and forty-six percent of all deaths result from heart disease, strokes, or related complications; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina is blessed with a group of hospitals which are equipped to provide state-of-the-art care for patients suffering from heart disease; and

Whereas, one hospital which falls into this category is the Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia which has been involved in providing non-invasive heart care for more than fifty years; and

Whereas, Richland Memorial is a regional hospital which in the last decade has made great strides in becoming a state-of-the-art heart care facility. These improvements include the following:

(1) In 1981, the cardiac catheterization laboratory was established;

(2) Since 1984, Richland Memorial Hospital has performed 10,767 cardiac catheterization procedures and 1,675 open-heart surgeries;

(3) In 1987, Richland Memorial's cardiology activities were combined to form The Heart Center;

(4) In 1989, The Heart Center introduced the first digitized cardiac catheterization laboratory to the Midlands; and

Whereas, today The Heart Center at Richland Memorial serves more than two thousand patients annually who come from throughout the State for diagnosis and treatment; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and commend this outstanding hospital for its care and service to patients in the Midlands region and throughout South Carolina who suffer from heart disease. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Richland Memorial Hospital and its Heart Center for the outstanding care it provides to patients in the Midlands region and throughout South Carolina who suffer from heart disease, on the occasion of National Heart Month during February.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Richland Memorial Hospital.
