A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE STATE NEWSPAPER ON THE CELEBRATION OF ITS CENTENNIAL.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were delighted to learn that The State newspaper celebrated its one hundredth anniversary on February 18, 1991; and

Whereas, from its beginning, The State sought to be the recorder of events, not merely within boundaries of Columbia but within the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, its very name is singular among the nation's daily newspapers; and

Whereas, started by two brothers, Narcisco G. and Ambrose Gonzales, the paper was planned as "a Democratic newspaper, true in every line to the highest principles of the party, and it political course will be characterized by frankness and fearlessness"; and

Whereas, one hundred years after its founding, The State is South Carolina's largest newspaper with a circulation in each of the forty-six counties; and

Whereas, the paper has become a major influence in the Palmetto State's life, not merely recording but in many ways shaping the history of this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate The State newspaper on the celebration of its centennial.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Frank M. McComas, Publisher.
