A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MARGARET BERYL LACEY BAPTISTE OF CHARLESTON COUNTY FOR HER OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED FEDERAL EMPLOYEES.

Whereas, Margaret Beryl Lacey Baptiste was born in London, England, and emigrated to New York in 1956; and

Whereas, she has served on church councils of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, New York, and St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Charleston, South Carolina; and

Whereas, she was President of the Lutheran Church Women of Good Shepherd for 1972-73; and

Whereas, while living in New York, she was active in fund-raising activities for the Girl Scouts and Bay Ridge Day Nursery; and

Whereas, Margaret Baptiste was President and served on the Executive Board for the Lutheran Church Women of St. Matthews, and was a founding member and immediate past President of the Lutheran Social Services of Greater Charleston; and

Whereas, in 1989 she was elected President of the South Carolina Federation, first spouse to be elected to that position, and was re-elected in 1990, first President ever to be re-elected to that position; and

Whereas, Margaret is currently Women's Initiative Spokesperson for AARP in Region 4, addressing the problems of older women. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize Margaret Beryl Lacey Baptiste of Charleston for her outstanding service to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Margaret Beryl Lacey Baptiste.
