A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 53-5-15 SO AS TO REQUIRE THE STATE-SUPPORTED INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS OF THE STATE TO OBSERVE THE VETERANS DAY HOLIDAY AS PART OF THEIR HOLIDAY SCHEDULE.

Whereas, Veterans Day is a legal holiday in South Carolina for all state departments and agencies; and

Whereas, this holiday solemnly commemorates the valor and sacrifices of veterans and is highly deserving of observance across South Carolina; and

Whereas, South Carolina schools teach their students about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and also teach appreciation for living in the land of freedom and respect for those who fought and died to preserve that freedom; and

Whereas, communities celebrate Veterans Day with patriotic parades, speeches, and ceremonies; and

Whereas, Veterans Day is not observed as a holiday by the public schools in this State or the state-supported colleges and universities, but if it were so observed students would be able to participate in or observe patriotic parades or ceremonies held in tribute to those who fought and died to preserve the freedom this country enjoys. Now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 53-5-15. The state-supported institutions of higher learning and the school districts of the State shall observe the Veterans Day holiday as part of their holiday schedule."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
