A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF JAMES MOORER OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, A SOUTH CAROLINA COACHING LEGEND, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, James Moorer of Spartanburg County, who became a coaching legend at Sims High School in Union County in the 1950's, died on Thursday, January 14, 1993, at the age of sixty-nine; and

Whereas, Coach Moorer was born in Calhoun County and grew up in Spartanburg County and had been a guidance counselor at Spartanburg Methodist College from 1972 until he retired in 1992; and

Whereas, he coached football at Sims High from 1946-57 and compiled a 131-10-9 record, which included a string of ninety-six consecutive games without a loss; and

Whereas, he had phenomenal coaching success in other sports, also served as principal at Sims High, and became the first African-American to be inducted into the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1975; and

Whereas, he was an amazing and outstanding individual who was known, respected, admired, and loved for his integrity, energy, exemplary lifestyle, abilities, and talent and for the positive way in which he shaped the lives of so many of his athletes and students; and

Whereas, we want Coach Moorer's family and many friends to know that they are in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of James Moorer of Spartanburg County, a South Carolina coaching legend, and extend sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Moorer's family.
